Foreign Affairs Fellow - San Diego, CA 92108

*Foreign Affairs Fellowship

The San Diego World Affairs Council (SDWAC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization affiliated with the World Affairs Councils of America. SDWAC is dedicated to educating and engaging San Diegans on global issues, international relations and understanding of foreign cultures. We organize educational talks and events on international political, economic and cultural issues that impact our community and the world around us. SDWAC has a part-time, paid position opening for a graduate student or post-graduate with concentrations in international affairs, political science or associated disciplines.

Requirements for this Foreign Affairs Fellowship position are as follows:

1) Commitment to a 12-month period in San Diego, averaging 16 hours per week, starting immediately.

2) Graduate student or post-graduate scholar majoring in international affairs or an associated discipline with a broad understanding and appreciation of global issues and the political landscape in the U.S. and internationally.

3) Strong writing skills with attention to detail and editing skills.

4) Dependability and responsiveness with a sense of situational-dependent urgency derived from proven time management skills.

5) Leadership qualities and initiative combined with the maturity to challenge conventional thinking.

Responsibilities of this Fellowship are two-fold:

I - Editor

This position is accountable for reviewing and proofreading all text that is produced for external purposes either in hard copy or digital formats such as newsletters, e-blasts, website postings, biographic write-ups, topical descriptions, blogs, etc. The purpose is to ensure that the quality of

writing and formatting is accurate and appropriate, maintaining a high-quality level of written text and layout.

II – Events manager

This position will work closely with the Program Committee to successfully execute an average of one event per month, including a minimum of two special events per year. This involves allocating personnel resources to cover various required functions at the event, supervising the work of volunteers before, during and after the event, and liaising with the venue and (as required) the speaker(s). Events are customized to fit the topic and speaker(s) involved and venue available, with the purpose of engaging a range of members, institutional/corporate entities and community participants. The goal of special events is to raise the profile of SDWAC while engaging the community on critical, global or geopolitical issues by providing expert information on a topic of salient importance. A secondary goal would be to meet the pre-stated financial objective (which could involve collaboration with another organization) of revenue generation.

Hourly pay would be between $11 to $14 per hour depending on experience and expertise. The Foreign Affairs Fellow is an independent contractor responsible for keeping track of his/her hours. At present the incumbent would be expected to work an average of 16 hours per week, with some weeks of more intensive activity balanced by weeks that are slower-paced, and compensation paid monthly.
